Quick Answer

This online calculator applies one operation to two numbers — add, subtract, multiply, divide, raise to a power, take a square root or find a remainder — and also shows the square and cube of the result. For example, 2 to the power 10 is 1,024, the square root of 144 is 12, and 17 mod 5 leaves a remainder of 2. It is handy for quick checks without opening another app; results are rounded to 4 decimal places, division by zero is blocked, and each calculation is a single operation rather than a chained expression.

How This Calculation Works

  • Values calculate dynamically in real-time as you enter figures or adjust sliders.
  • The equation on the right is exactly what the calculator runs — check any result by hand.
Core Equation
Operations on X and Y: Add: X + Y | Subtract: X − Y Multiply: X × Y | Divide: X ÷ Y (Y ≠ 0) Power: X^Y | Square root: √X (X ≥ 0) Modulo: remainder of X ÷ Y Also shown: result² and result³ Results are rounded to 4 decimal places. For multi-step expressions, apply BODMAS/PEMDAS yourself: Brackets → Orders (powers, roots) → Division/Multiplication → Addition/Subtraction

How to Use the General Calculator

Quick 3-step guide for accurate and fast calculations

STEP 01

Enter your first number (x)

In the General Calculator, fill in First Number (X), Mathematical Operation and Second Number (Y).

STEP 02

Read your calculation result

The General Calculator instantly shows Calculation Result, Mathematical Expression, Square of Result and Cube of Result, updating as you type.

STEP 03

Compare scenarios

Change Mathematical Operation to see how it affects Calculation Result, then check the formula below to verify the math.

Specific Instructions:

Enter the first number (X), choose an operation — addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponentiation (X^Y), square root of X or modulo (remainder) — and enter the second number (Y) if the operation needs one. The result updates as you type, with the expression written out and the square and cube of the result.

General Calculator Formula

The General Calculator uses the following formula, calculated in your browser as you change the inputs:

Operations on X and Y: Add: X + Y | Subtract: X − Y Multiply: X × Y | Divide: X ÷ Y (Y ≠ 0) Power: X^Y | Square root: √X (X ≥ 0) Modulo: remainder of X ÷ Y Also shown: result² and result³ Results are rounded to 4 decimal places. For multi-step expressions, apply BODMAS/PEMDAS yourself: Brackets → Orders (powers, roots) → Division/Multiplication → Addition/Subtraction

Worked Example: General Calculator

X = 2, Power, Y = 10 = 2^10 = 1,024 X = 144, Square root = √144 = 12 (square 144, cube 1,728) X = 17, Modulo, Y = 5 = 17 mod 5 = 2 (because 17 = 3 × 5 + 2)

Frequently Asked Questions — General Calculator

How do I work out a multi-step expression?

Each calculation here is one operation on two numbers, so break longer expressions into steps using the order of operations (BODMAS/PEMDAS): brackets, then powers and roots, then division and multiplication, then addition and subtraction. For example, 15 + 20% of 150: first multiply 150 × 0.2 = 30, then add 15 + 30 = 45. For √144 + 3²: take √144 = 12, then 3 to the power 2 = 9, then add to get 21.

Can I use my keyboard to type calculations?

Yes. Click into the first number field, type the value, press Tab to move to the operation drop-down (arrow keys change the selection), then Tab again to type the second number. Numbers can include decimals, such as 12.75, and negative values. Typing is usually faster than a button keypad when you are copying figures from a spreadsheet or receipt, and you can edit either number and recalculate without starting over.

How do I calculate a percentage using this calculator?

Convert the percentage to a decimal and multiply. To find 18% of 500, choose Multiplication, enter 500 as X and 0.18 as Y, and the result is 90. To add 18% (for example GST), multiply by 1.18: 500 × 1.18 = 590. For discounts, percentage change or 'X is what percent of Y', the dedicated Percentage Calculator on this site handles each case in one step with the formula shown.
